There are sixty two counties in the state of New York. There were originally twelve counties, which were established just after the British annexed the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam. Five of the New York counties are equivalent to the five boroughs. New York City is the county seat of Bronx, Kings, New York, Queens and Richmond (Staten Island).
