How To Earn Money While You Live Aboard A Sailboat. Cruising Jobs.

Some Ideas For Live Aboard Jobs

You don't have to be rich to live on a sailboat. There are a number of ways that you can make a living while living your dream and sailing from place to place. First you should take an inventory of your skills and determine which skills you have that are marketable anywhere you go. I was fortunate to live aboard my own sailboat while sailing around the Caribbean for three years.

I did so not with inherited money or winning the lottery but with saved money and working along the way to earn cruising money. Although there are rules against working in the countries that you visit there are many opportunities in the gray areas such as performing services for fellow sailors and the barter system is also alive and well with live aboard sailors.

Buy some good boat cleaning tools. One good way to earn some extra cruising money in an area where there are a lot of cruising sailboats is to do boat bottom cleaning. Don't advertise on shore but instead do so by word of mouth and keep your business transactions between fellow sailors. All you need are some good boat brushes and SCUBA gear. Using a surface air system with a small air compressor can be one way to go that saves you from costly air fills. You can clean a sailboat boat bottom with a mask and snorkel but it is not easy and I don't recommend it as a way to make cruising money.

For live aboard sailors, providing services for other cruisers can be lucrative.

Providing Services For Other Live Aboard Sailors

Perform important services that are in demand by the cruising community. If you have any skills that other cruising, live aboard sailors might need, such as cutting hair or doing nails then you can earn a few dollars along the way as well as make a few new friends. You can also barter these skills for other services such as boat bottom cleaning and save your cruising money. If you have enough power onboard and have sewing skills then consider taking along an industrial sewing machine so that you can do sail repair.
If your boat is quite large and you have enough room and the skills there is always a need for someone who can weld aluminum boat parts.
If you are skilled at varnishing then you can always find work in a crowded port or anchorage. You can add the cost of materials and supplies into your bid or work at an hourly rate.

Either way the only things you will need to own are items such as scrapers and knee pads.
If you want to make a little extra money along the way or barter for services that you need to keep your cruising sailboat running there are always opportunities for those with imagination and drive.

Writing Jobs, Blogging and Web Based Jobs

Some live aboard sailors have found that writing is a good way to make a living. Consider starting a blog or website about your journey. You can monetize your site by joining Google's adsense program, Amazon Associates, eBay partner Network and other such programs. Good writers can earn income by submitting sailing related articles to magazines such as Latitudes and Attitudes and Cruising World.

There are sites such as Xomba. where writers can earn ongoing income from articles. Here is an article listing some of the sites where you can earn from writing:  Online Ways to Make Money Online Without Scams   Live aboard sailors who blog and often used shore based internet cafe's, laptop aircards and wireless cards. For how to pick up shore based open wireless internet at long range, such as out in an anchorage see: How to get free Wifi - Internet with long range Wifi adapters and antennas.

Cheers.
